Obituary for Henrianna M "Hank" Smith

Henrianna M Smith, age 85, passed away at home in Oak Harbor on Monday, Jan 1, 2018, surrounded by her loving family.

Henrianna was born in Paris, TX, on December 23, 1932, to Archie and Laura (Halley) Merriott, and raised in Antlers and Norman, Oklahoma. She was named after her maternal grandfather, Henry, and grandmother, Anna. In high school in Norman she gained the nickname “Hank.”

“Hank” graduated from Norman High School, then the University of Oklahoma with a BA degree in special education. She married Carl G Smith on June 8, 1954, who became a career Regular Army officer. They happily spent the next 26 years in various assignments in the United States, Italy, Philippines, Vietnam and Germany. She visited Carl in Vietnam 5 times during his 2nd year of combat duty.

Her life's passions were her family, teaching special education in several different states and gourmet cooking, along with many other areas of interest and serving the LORD.

“Hank” is survived by Carl, her husband of 63.6 years; their daughters Lee Ann Spence (Blair) of Ellinwood, KS, and Halley Smith-La Bombard (Lou) of Oak Harbor; 5 grandchildren, Melissa, Heather, Jeremy, Josiah and Kelsey; 6 great-grandchildren; and 2 great-great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her mother, Laura (Halley) Henderson; babies Harry John and Glenn Robert; and daughter Laura Cunningham.

A memorial service will be held at Grace Community Church in Oak Harbor, 3 p.m., Sunday, Jan 21, 2018, Pastors Jesse and Bonnie Raymond officiating. Family and friends are encouraged to share memories and condolences at www.whidbeymemorial.com
